Biblioteca Piccolomini

Located within the Duomo di Siena, the Biblioteca Piccolomini stands as one of the city’s most remarkable Renaissance spaces.

Commissioned to celebrate Pope Pius II, the library tells its story not through books alone, but through colour, imagery and visual narrative.

The celebrated frescoes by Pinturicchio unfold across the walls, illustrating scenes of humanist learning, political ambition and spiritual authority. Here, knowledge is shaped through images, designed to educate, persuade and endure over time.

More than a historic library, the Biblioteca Piccolomini reveals how art, power and learning were inseparable in Renaissance Siena, offering visitors an intimate insight into a culture where knowledge was meant to be seen, experienced and shared.

The Biblioteca Piccolomini can be reached in under five minutes on foot from Palazzo Sozzini Malavolti, within the Cathedral complex.
